“Día de Muertos,” or the “Day of the Dead,” is a cherished tradition in Mexico and many Latin American countries that is celebrated to honor and remember departed loved ones. This colorful holiday blends traditional ephemeral elements with music and food of cultural expression. Celebrated annually from October 31 to November 2, “Día de Muertos” features vibrant altars called “ofrendas,” decorated with marigolds, candles, photographs, and favorite foods of the deceased, symbolizing a joyful reunion between the living and the departed.

This year, the International Student Club (ISC) at Mahidol University International College (MUIC) brought this tradition to the MUIC community with engaging workshops that immersed students in the holiday’s customs at the lobby of the Ground Floor, Aditayathorn Building, on October 31, 2024.

In this activity, 240 participating students crafted symbolic marigolds and “papel picado” out of colored paper, which are iconic decorations that adorn altars and public spaces during this holiday. ISC also offered “Pan de Muertos,” a traditional sweet bread representing the cyclical nature of life, for students to enjoy.

This celebrational workshop provided students with an opportunity to explore the cultural and spiritual significance of “Día de Muertos,” encouraging a deeper appreciation for global traditions and fostering a sense of community through shared learning and cultural exchange.
