The Sigma Club of Mahidol University International College (MUIC) organized a “Non-Newtonian Flow Lab” at Room A310, Charinyarasami Hall, 3rd Floor, Aditayathorn Building on March 9, 2026.

“Non-Newtonian Flow Lab” was composed of several hands-on activities conducted within the Fizz Lab, a dedicated maker-space focused on the chemistry, formulation, and production of effervescent bath bombs. The primary objective of the workshop was to explore how altering dry-to-wet ingredient ratios affects the structural integrity, shelf life, and ultimate fizzing reaction of the final product. There were 11 students and six staff members who participated in the event.

The core activity involved the precise measurement and blending of weak acids and bases—specifically citric acid and sodium bicarbonate. Because these ingredients react instantly when exposed to moisture, maintaining a strict, low-humidity environment and carefully regulating the binding agents (such as light carrier oils and water-based mists) was critical. Participants experimented with adding various secondary ingredients, including epsom salts for density, cornstarch to slow down the effervescent reaction, and specific essential oils or colorants for sensory customization.

Beyond individual formulation, the lab work included packing the mixtures into high-pressure molds and monitoring the curing process. Testing was then conducted to analyze how different packing densities change the dissolution rate when submerged in water. Understanding these variables provides practical insight into fundamental acid-base reactions, material compaction, and industrial product design.
