Award-Winning Journalists Teach Media Com Students How to Spot Fake News

The Media and Communication Program of Mahidol University International College (MUIC) invited Khun Ken G. Weber and Khun Nicha Wachpanich, award-winning journalists from independent media outlet HardStories, on March 26, 2026 to deliver a hands-on workshop exploring the challenges of misinformation in today’s digital landscape.

As fake news continues to circulate widely, the session focused on how journalists and media practitioners can identify misleading content and investigate those behind it. Students were introduced to the basics of Open Source Intelligence (OSINT), with practical exercises that encouraged them to verify information, trace sources, and apply these techniques to feature and human rights reporting.

The workshop also drew on the speakers’ own investigative work, including “How fake news is turning Thais against Myanmar migrants,” which recently received the Amnesty Human Rights Media Award. This provided students with a clear example of how misinformation can shape public perception and impact real communities.

By bringing industry practitioners into the classroom, the session aimed to bridge theory and practice, while reinforcing the importance of accuracy, ethics, and critical thinking in journalism.
