From Senior to Freshie: 5 Ways to Make the Most of Your MUIC Journey

Welcome to MUIC! Stepping onto campus as a freshman is an incredible feeling—it’s exciting, a little overwhelming, and full of fresh possibilities. Your time at MUIC is a blank canvas where you get to build your confidence, explore the world, and figure out who you want to become.

We asked Ms. Natnaree “Junnie” Lertyingyot, a 4th Year Food Science and Technology student, who has accomplished numerous feats as a student—from winning food technology competitions with her team to being an active club official, going on exchange studies in the UK, and many more—to share some pieces of advice that you as freshmen can find valuable as you start your university journey.

So, here they are—Junnie’s five pieces of practical advice to help you hit the ground running, make lasting memories, and set yourself up for success!

1. Join MUIC Activities
MUIC offers a wide range of activities throughout the four-year program. On top of academic responsibilities, I recommend making the most of university life by getting involved in clubs, events, or student organizations that interest you. This will help you discover new experiences, develop soft skills, and join the vibrant MUIC community. It’s also a great way to destress. You will never regret taking part in these opportunities—they prepare you for your career and build memorable moments.

2. Don’t Hesitate to Ask
University is an important new chapter in your life, and you may encounter challenges and unfamiliar experiences along the way. Never hesitate to ask questions whenever you feel unsure or curious about lessons, campus life, or even personal concerns. Asking questions is one of the most effective ways to learn and grow. You’ll find that seniors, professors, and staff are always willing to guide you, and these supportive conversations will genuinely help you improve rapidly and confidently.

3. Go on Exchange / Study Abroad
MUIC has numerous partner universities for study abroad, allowing you to choose a country or university that interests you. Studying abroad is a unique chance to live independently, explore different cultures, and adapt to new learning environments. I spent a semester at the University of Reading, UK, and it was one of the best times of my life. Living independently broadened my perspective and gave me valuable global skills that will stay with me forever.

4. Choose Subjects Based on Interest
MUIC offers a flexible curriculum and study schedule, giving you the freedom to design your own path. To make the most of this, select courses that genuinely excite you and support your future goals, rather than choosing options that seem easy or popular. General education, minors, I-Designs, and free electives allow you to shape your direction. Every course decision contributes to a unique version of yourself, keeping you motivated and truly inspired for your future.

5. Make Strong Connections
Studying alongside classmates from 17 different majors and diverse international backgrounds offers a prime opportunity to build meaningful relationships. Take time to connect with your peers, professors, and university staff throughout your journey. Exchanging unique experiences and perspectives will greatly enrich your daily campus life. Active networking not only makes your time at MUIC much more enjoyable, but it also opens valuable doors to professional and personal opportunities long after you graduate.

At the end of the day, your university experience is entirely what you choose to make it. By actively getting involved in campus activities, speaking up when you need help, exploring international exchange programs, choosing courses that excite you, and building connections across majors, you are doing far more than earning a degree—you are shaping the person you will become after graduation.

Don't wait until your senior year to start exploring everything MUIC has to offer. Take the leap today: join that club, ask that question in class, look into study abroad destinations, and say hello to the person sitting next to you. Your four years will fly by before you know it, so start crafting your own unique MUIC story right now!
