Mahidol University International College’s (MUIC) International Relations and Global Affairs (IRGA) Program organized a panel discussion on “Environmental Sustainability in Thailand and Beyond” on November 10, 2023 at Charinyarasami Hall, Aditayathorn Building.

The guest speakers were Mr. Varawut Silpa-archa, Minister of Social Development and Human Security, and Dr. Petch Manopawitr, a conservation scientist who is also Technical Advisor for International Organizations, Secretary General of Green World Foundation and President of Bird Conservation Society of Thailand.

The discussion started off with identifying the biggest environmental issues in Thailand. Minister Varawut said El Nino and La Nina top his list due to the damage caused by drought and floods not only on the daily lives of people but also to the economy. This is followed by PM 2.5 and loss of biodiversity.

Asked how the government responds to these issues, he replied that in the long term, there is a need to address the greenhouse effect. On the other hand, policies that will reduce carbon emissions in the short term should be enacted and implemented.

Regarding the private sector’s part in environmental degradation, Dr. Petch said big business should acknowledge the environmental and social costs of doing business and act responsibly. Corporations should ensure that they do not impact the environment negatively and should instead lead the way in protecting the ecology.

Minister Varawut also emphasized the need to enlist the support of local communities in the efforts to save the environment. Aside from offering financial incentives, he said local residents should also be made aware that environmental abuse can lead to risks to their own lives.

Meanwhile, Dr. Petch highlighted the major contribution of international organizations in achieving environmental sustainability, giving as example the United Nations which facilitated the Paris Agreement of 2015 wherein 196 countries signed the UN Climate Deal. Aside from this is the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) which serves as objectives for countries in their efforts to achieve sustainability. Some of the SDGs that directly benefit the environment include Clean water and sanitation (SDG 6), Affordable and clean energy (SDG 7), Sustainable cities and communities (SDG 11), and Climate action (SDG 13), among others.

Mr. Christian Oesterheld, IRGA Program Director, gave the opening remarks. Several MUIC executives and faculty members were in attendance while IRGA student volunteers led by the IRGA Ambassadors played an active part in organizing the event.
