Mahidol University International College (MUIC) again proved itself to be a bastion of liberal arts with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding with the Embassy of Spain paving the way for a stronger Spanish language program.

Prof. Chulathida Chomchai, M.D., MUIC Dean, signed the MOU on behalf of the college while H.E. Mr. Felipe de la Morena Casado, Spanish Ambassador to Thailand, signed on behalf of the Spanish Agency for International Cooperation and Development (AECID) on February 23, 2024 at Charinyarasami Hall in Aditayathorn Building.

Under the MOU, AECID will provide MUIC’s Spanish language program (under the Humanities and Language Division) with a part-time lecturer whose salary will come from AECID’s grant while MUIC will provide the necessary documents and help facilitate the lecturer’s visa and give him or her access to MUIC’s learning facilities.

Dean Chulathida, in her speech, praised this development, noting the importance of learning the Spanish language—indeed any foreign language—in today’s world. She said she herself studied the Spanish language for four years while growing up in California in the United States and that as a young physician most of her patients in the hospital were Latinos.

Ambassador Felipe de la Morena Casado, on the other hand, emphasized the learning and career opportunities that await Spanish speakers and complimented MUIC’s vibrant Spanish language program.

Several MUIC executives and faculty members, students, and staff members attended the event.
