MUIC’s IRGA Hosts Panel on Careers in Diplomacy & IGOs

The International Relations and Global Affairs (IRGA) Program of Mahidol University International College’s (MUIC) Social Science Division hosted a panel event entitled “Careers in Diplomacy and IGOs” on February 7, 2024 at Charinyarasami Hall.

Students heard from three excellent examples of young professionals who have carved out a career in the field of diplomacy, international organizations and development.

Ms. Marie-Lyne Thomas is a Technical Officer at Better Work ILO, United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP). Originally from Haiti, Ms. Thomas outlined her move from the corporate world to the more interesting world of the international development sector. Marie-Lyne also had incredibly useful insights on the issue of preparing for a career more broadly, urging students to capitalize on their time at university to flesh out their curriculum vitae (CV), develop their skills and pursue lifelong learning.

Ms. Thanaporn Saleephol (Kwan) is a Press & Information Officer with the Delegation of the European Union to Thailand. She reflected on her journey from university in Thailand and the UK to an internship at the EU offices in Bangkok until finally taking up a full-time role there. Kwan drew attention to the importance of communication and interpersonal skills, which are skill sets that can and should be developed while still in university.

Ms Shinakarn Wongbhumwatana (Chilli) is a Personal Assistant to His Excellency the Ambassador of the Maldives, having previously held a similar role at the Embassy of Nepal. Chilli emphasized the skills in her role that drew directly on her educational journey, having completed a Master of Arts in International Relations. Of critical importance in her role is the daily task of preparing briefings and remaining informed about national and international events.

All three panellists shared valuable insights on the mindset needed to transition from university to the world of work, particularly in the sector most relevant to the discipline. Their individual journeys to their current role made for fascinating listening.

Social Science Division would like to extend its deep appreciation to all three guest speakers for their valuable insights and helping out students reflect on their future career choices.
