Mahidol University International College’s (MUIC) Sign Language Club organized an American Sign Language (ASL) Beginner’s Class at Room A347, Aditayathorn Building on May 25, 2023.

The club’s instructor taught the 31 participating students how to gesture alphabets and let them spell easy words and their names. There was also a small game that let the students guess the words that were spelled by the instructor. For the first part of the class, they focused more on basic sentences that students could see or use in daily life. The sentences that were taught were comprehensive such as assisting someone who is asking for direction. As the grammar of verbal languages and sign language are different, the instructor had to explain the differences.

At the end of the class, participants tested out their knowledge through a quick Kahoot game. The winners were: Arin Tirachorkphokin, who received the 1st Place prize worth 900 Baht cash; Napat Palivanich who came in second and received 600 Baht cash prize; and Channitcha Tangkana, 3rd Place, who was awarded 300 Baht cash prize.

The club said it “aims to provide classes and sign language-related activities every term to enhance the students’ communication. Be updated through the club’s social media platforms @muicslc!”
