Chemistry Sophomore Lists Key Takeaways from Journey to the Asian Science Camp

Imagine stepping into a vibrant hall surrounded by world-renowned Nobel laureates and brilliant young minds from across Asia, ready to ignite the future of scientific discovery. For Ms. Natnicha Puttarangsee, a 2nd Year Chemistry student at Mahidol University International College (MUIC), that dream became a reality when she earned a coveted spot in the national delegation for the Asian Science Camp (ASC) 2026 at the University of Hong Kong held from August 2 to 8, 2026.

While the week was packed with cutting-edge ideas and international teamwork, her most profound takeaways weren't just found in a research lab—they were valuable life lessons that redefined how she approaches both science and unexpected hurdles.

Landing a spot at ASC 2026 was the result of relentless dedication. Encouraged by her advisor, Dr. Chaleena Pimpasri, Chemistry Program Director, Natnicha submitted her application, passed a rigorous examination, and navigated a highly competitive selection camp to represent Thailand. However, right in the middle of the August event, adversity struck: Natnicha fell ill and missed two full days of lectures and activities. Instead of letting disappointment shadow her experience, she embraced her very first major lesson: learning to accept and make the most out of an unfortunate situation outside your control. Reframing the setback with remarkable grace, Natnicha focused on maximizing every remaining moment, noting that overcoming the hurdle left her far better equipped to handle life's unpredictable moments in the future.

When she rejoined the camp activities, Natnicha was fully immersed in sessions led by world-class scientists, including Nobel laureates physicist Prof. Ferenc Krausz and chemist Prof. Vivian Yam; along with multi-awarded molecular biologist Prof. Dennis Lo.

Listening to these legendary researchers map out the decades behind their breakthroughs sparked her second vital realization: “It takes time to achieve great things.” Seeing that great discoveries rest on years of trial, error, and unwavering perseverance deepened her patience for scientific research. During a dialogue session with Prof. Ferenc Krausz, she was especially inspired by his advice on asking the right research questions—the kind that spark an inexhaustible source of personal motivation.

Beyond inspiring lectures, the camp offered rich hands-on collaboration. Natnicha was randomly paired with four high school seniors from Vietnam, Hong Kong, South Korea, and Uzbekistan to create a poster presentation. Together, they conceptualized and worked on the "Artificial Pollinator Bee" project, exploring the development of robotic bees to pollinate crops and safeguard food supplies against declining pollinator populations. The cross-cultural group gelled quickly, receiving memorable feedback including one from a professor who pointed out that robotic designs often perform more efficiently when built as functional machinery rather than imitating animal forms.

Natnicha’s unforgettable week in Hong Kong was a powerful mix of high-level science, international friendship, and personal growth. Her journey serves as an inspiring reminder to the entire MUIC community that extraordinary doors open when you dare to put in the effort.

For fellow students dreaming of representing MUIC on a global stage, Natnicha’s story proves that with hard work, strong mentorship, and a resilient mindset, you too can unlock life-changing priority opportunities and turn your personal passions into lasting impact.

Swimming, Cycling, and Running Toward a Quiet Mind

On August 22, 2026, I completed my first IRONMAN triathlon in Tallinn, Estonia: a 3.8 km swim, a 180 km bike ride, and a 42.2 km marathon. It took me 11 hours and 35 minutes. While one of the perks of finishing an IRONMAN is the right to brag, that isn’t the point of this post. The point is that MUIC supported me in achieving this personal goal through the 40th Anniversary Academic Changemakers Scholarship.
