A Taste of France: Exploring Culture and Language at Alliance Française de Bangkok

By Ajarn Agnieszka Atthasit

At Mahidol University International College (MUIC), French is more than just a subject—it’s a gateway to personal growth, art and culture, academic excellence, and global career prospects. Whether pursued as a major in Intercultural Studies and Languages or as a minor, French connects students to a vast international community of over 300 million speakers. As an official language in 29 countries and a key player in diplomacy, research, fashion, cinema, and the arts, French remains an important language on the global stage.

On Friday, February 7, 2025, Pre-Intermediate French II students visited Alliance Française, a French language and culture institution established in Thailand since 1912. The program for the visit began with a warm welcome from Ms. Katia Mohandi, Deputy Director of the institution, a presentation of Alliance Française and its activities, and a tour of the building. Next was a Campus France presentation at the médiathèque, with a Q&A session. Finally, students enjoyed a French delicacy, la Galette des Rois, with a workshop featuring a discussion on the history and traditions surrounding this cake, a recipe demonstration, and a tasting session. Quel délice!

The trip also introduced students to the DELF/DALF certification, an internationally recognized diploma that assesses French language proficiency that can open doors to academic and professional opportunities in the French-speaking world.

In addition to the planned formalization of collaboration with the Alliance Française in Bangkok next year, the French program at MUIC has been working with the Alliance Française in Bordeaux, France, since 2021. This partnership has led to the organization of a yearly Summer Program Abroad, an immersive learning experience in one of France’s most charming cities, blending language study with cultural exploration.

With more collaborations, cultural events, and immersive experiences on the horizon, MUIC students have an exciting French journey ahead!
