1. Ms. Chulada "Be Mild" Phinun
Q: What motivated you to join the 2+2 Dual Degree Program?
A: Studying Chemistry at MUIC made me realize how valuable it is to apply science beyond the classroom. When introduced to the program, I was interested in taking my laboratory experience from MUIC and seeing how it could be applied overseas. Flinders University allowed me to explore forensic and analytical science—applying chemistry to solve crimes and evaluate evidence—while stepping outside my comfort zone to live and study independently in another country.
Q: What were the most interesting courses and projects you undertook at Flinders?
A: Forensic subjects involving crime scene management, bloodstain pattern analysis, and trajectory analysis gave me a unique perspective on science beyond traditional laboratories. My research project on metformin and LC method development was also invaluable. It allowed me to experience actual research work, troubleshooting analytical problems independently while learning directly from supervisors and postgraduate students.
Q: What were the toughest and happiest aspects of your time in Australia?
A: The toughest part was building a life in a completely new environment—living far from family while adapting to a new culture, language, and education system while keeping up with coursework and research. The happiest part was realizing how much I had changed. By the end, I had become someone who could conduct research, solve problems, and manage everyday life independently. Graduation proved that all those difficult moments were worth it.
Q: What key life lesson and advice would you share with prospective students?
A: I learned to become 'comfortable with being uncomfortable,' because being outside your comfort zone is where you grow the most. My advice for future Chemistry students considering the program is to be fearless about stepping outside your comfort zone. To me, being fearless does not mean never feeling nervous or uncertain; it means being willing to take the next step, even when you do not know exactly what lies ahead.
2. Ms. Natthakarn "June" Olanchantarothai
Q: What made you decide to join the 2+2 Dual Degree Program?
A: I have always been interested in forensic science from watching TV shows. However, only a few universities in Thailand have a dedicated program for forensic science. Joining this program was beneficial for me as MUIC gave me an opportunity to study abroad, experience a new culture, and obtain two degrees.
Q: What was the most interesting course you enrolled in at Flinders?
A: FORS3001 Crime Scene Management. This course teaches you all about how to investigate a crime scene, collect evidence, take photographs, interpret data, and write a report. The most interesting part is that Flinders University has a mock crime scene where students get hands-on experience conducting investigations. Evidence varies from DNA and fingerprints to sexual fluid, blood, and bullets.
Q: What were the toughest and happiest aspects of your time in Australia?
A: The toughest part was doing laboratory work. At MUIC, professors guide students step by step. At Flinders, professors let you jump straight in from the start—even with complicated protocols or instruments—observing from afar and stepping in when you need help.
The happiest part was experiencing Australia's multicultural environment and wildlife. I am also proud of myself for having a part-time job to support myself while learning to manage my time juggling work, study, and relaxation.
Q: What key lessons did you learn during your journey?
A: It’s very crucial to be independent, manage time, and be responsible for yourself. However, it is okay to ask for help, as people and the community are ready to help you through problems. This journey is about self-growth, so do not be hard on yourself. Australians value work-life balance; therefore, it is okay to take a rest.
Q: Would you recommend this program to fellow Chemistry students?
A: I highly recommend future students interested in forensic science or chemistry to join. Studying at Flinders allowed me to join a research group with a supportive team and supervisor to help me learn, thrive, and flourish. This opportunity teaches critical thinking and the research process, which will benefit my future graduate studies and career.
