A Shot of Inspiration: How an MUIC Alumnus Brewed Capresso Coffee Beyond the Red Ocean

When Mahidol University International College (MUIC) marketing alumnus Mr. Nathaphon “Tee” Komonvitayakun (Class of 2016) set out to launch a business with his university friends in 2023, he knew the coffee market was already buzzing. Traditional coffee shops and bean roasting ventures were a total "red ocean." Instead of crowding into an already packed room, Tee and his team did their homework, ran the numbers, and spotted an unserved space in the market: accessible, high-quality coffee capsules for the everyday coffee lover.

The inspiration hit when Tee noticed that premium coffee capsule prices on the market were often steep. Breaking down production feasibility, machine costs, and bean sourcing revealed a clearer, fairer path forward. “When we broke down the actual costs, the numbers showed that prices didn't need to be that high,” Tee explains. Capresso Coffee was born not to compete with local artisan cafes, but to fit seamlessly into daily routines. “Our goal was never to replace great cafes. We sell convenience, good coffee on busy mornings or work-from-home days.” By choosing a fair price point, they prioritized long-term customer loyalty over high single-box margins.

Maintaining a thriving business takes more than just a good cup of java—it requires constant curiosity and passion. Today, Capresso Coffee sources its own beans, collaborates with trusted roasters, and produces capsules using their own machinery. What keeps Tee continuously energized is the sheer adaptability of the industry and the joy of growing alongside friends. "Coffee itself is endless—there are always new beans, origins, and flavors to explore," he shares. Yet, the real heart of the business remains its everyday impact: “Knowing our capsules are part of someone's daily routine—that they chose us and keep choosing us—is what keeps us motivated to keep improving.”

For students dreaming of starting their own venture, Tee’s journey offers a powerful blend of encouragement. You don't need to reinvent the wheel to succeed; you simply need to analyze the market, identify unmet needs, and deliver something genuine at a fair price. Success comes from solving real daily problems and building strong partnerships with people you trust. So take a sip of courage, do your homework, and get ready to brew your own unique path to success!
