FAA and HLD, MUIC Fuse Film, Philosophy, Arts, and Dance at Arts & Culture Week

Mahidol University International College’s (MUIC) Aditayathorn Building transformed into a cultural hub on March 2-6, 2026 as Arts and Culture Week brought together filmmakers, artists, philosophers, and performers for five days of creative exploration.

Themed "On the Cusp of a New Consciousness," the event (which combined the outputs of the Fine and Applied Arts Division and the Humanities and Language Division) offered an ambitious program that challenged participants to expand their artistic horizons and engage with diverse cultural perspectives.

Cinema took center stage throughout the week, beginning Monday, March 2 with director Ratchapoom Boonbunchachoke's “A Useful Ghost,” followed by an engaging Q&A session. Wednesday's screening of “The Lost Princess: Lanna Re-imagined” with director Kornpat Pawakranond sparked conversations about gender, class, and the often-overlooked narratives of peripheral histories. The film programming culminated in the "48 Hours Film Festival," where student teams raced against the clock to produce short films over a couple of days, with winners announced Friday afternoon.

The week's workshop offerings reflected remarkable cultural breadth. Students explored Eastern artistic traditions through "Chinese and Japanese Calligraphy" sessions, while Alliance Française guided participants through "French Art and Colors Vocabulary." Physical expression found its moment in an "Introduction to Latin Dancing" workshop that had Charinyarasami Hall alive with rhythm. Creative writing enthusiasts benefited from poet and author Joe Shakarchi's expertise in "Exploring Creativity in Writing," while visual artists delved into emotional expression with Tum Ulit's "Visual Storytelling & Emotional Literacy" workshop.

Intellectual discourse complemented hands-on activities throughout the week. Dr. Lucas Scripter opened the festival with a philosophical exploration of "Pain, Suffering, and the Self," setting a contemplative tone. Journalist Gary Boyle addressed contemporary concerns in his talk on "Ethical AI Use in Media," providing crucial perspective on technology's role in creative industries. The week concluded with Songsin Tiewsomboon's "Visual Philosophy" workshop, which examined how fine art and imagination can awaken consciousness.

A significant milestone occurred Wednesday with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between Alliance Française and MUIC, formalizing a partnership that promises ongoing cultural collaboration and exchange opportunities for students.

Threading through Wednesday and Thursday, the student-led installation "From Roots to Flowers: A New Consciousness" transformed the Aditayathorn Lobby into an evolving art space, embodying the week's central theme of growth and transformation.

Arts and Culture Week 2026 successfully demonstrated that creativity transcends boundaries—whether linguistic, cultural, or disciplinary. By offering such varied programming, the Fine and Applied Arts Division and the Humanities and Language Division created space for students to discover new passions, develop skills, and engage meaningfully with global artistic traditions, truly placing the community on the cusp of expanded consciousness.
