Mahidol University International College’s (MUIC) Sign Language Club hosted a Zoom workshop for students to learn some introductory phrases in ASL with an American Sign Language (ASL)-certified volunteer teacher.

A total of 15 participants joined the online workshop which was held on March 4 from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm.

The first lessons were some nouns such as food, drinks, animals, colors and others. Afterwards, the participants were taught introductory phrases in ASL in a question-and-answer format. For example, “What is your favorite color? My favorite color is black.” After these sentences, the participants were taught some polite phrases like “please,” “excuse me,” “nice to meet you” and so on. The participants were also taught some phrases to use as beginners to talk to someone in the hard-of-hearing community such as “I am learning sign,” “Please correct me,” and others. Finally, towards the end, the participants were put in a breakout room of six people each where they practiced their ASL communication skills with each other and with club members who were supervising the activity.

The club said that since this was their last activity for the term, “we look forward to offer more classes on suggested topics in the future.

Please follow the club on social media and join its Line Open Chat for any updates and future activities.
