MUIC Welcomes UK Academic and Entrepreneur Who Spoke on Turning Science into Real-World Impact

Mahidol University International College (MUIC) had the honor of welcoming Prof. Duncan Graham, Associate Principal and Dean of the Faculty of Science, University of Strathclyde, Glasgow, UK, who delivered an inspiring talk at CharinyarasamiHall, 3rd Floor, Aditayathorn Building on November 6, 2025.

In his talk entitled, “Innovating as an Academic: Company Formation and Research Impact,” Prof. Graham shared his remarkable journey from academic researcher to entrepreneur, illustrating how great science can drive meaningful change in the real world. His first venture, Renishaw Diagnostics, successfully transformed university research into advanced medical diagnostic tools, providing invaluable lessons on navigating regulatory challenges, securing funding, and fostering innovation beyond the laboratory.

Building on this experience, his latest spin-out company, BioSERS, is pioneering rapid bacterial detection in chilled food environments through cutting-edge technology developed by Prof. Graham and his co-founders. By combining scientific creativity with entrepreneurial vision, BioSERS aims to make food production safer and more efficient.

Prof. Graham also reflected on the highs, hurdles, and lessons learned from transforming ideas into impactful ventures. He encouraged researchers to embrace entrepreneurship as a powerful pathway to creating societal benefit and advancing innovation.

Prof. Chulathida Chomchai, M.D., MUIC Dean also attended the event.

The event offered valuable inspiration for students, faculty, and aspiring researchers interested in exploring how scientific discoveries can be translated into real-world applications.
