According to Assoc. Prof. Dr. Aram Tangboonduangjit, Program Director of Applied Mathematics, the program stands out due to the following attributes:

  • Strong Emphasis on Practical Applications and Interdisciplinary Approach: We combine rigorous mathematical theory with real-world problem-solving, preparing students for diverse careers in data science, finance, engineering, research, and actuarial science.
  • Casualty Actuarial Society (CAS)University Recognition at Bronze Level: Being one of only two programs in Thailand recognized by the CAS highlights our dedication to preparing future property and casualty actuaries through our educational offerings.
  • International Faculty and Cutting-Edge Resources: Our program features a unique blend of international faculty who bring diverse expertise and perspectives. We provide students with access to modern computational tools and programming languages for mathematical modeling and data analysis, ensuring a globally competitive education.
  • Preparation for Diverse Careers: By integrating theoretical knowledge with practical skills, we equip students to succeed in various fields, making our program highly versatile and adaptable to emerging industry trends.

As a result, graduates of the Applied Mathematics program are expected to:

  • Demonstrate Proficiency in Core Mathematical Concepts and Techniques: Possess a strong foundation in fundamental mathematical theories and methodologies.
  • Apply Mathematical Knowledge to Real-World Problems: Utilize mathematical principles to solve practical problems across various disciplines, including actuarial science, data science, finance, and engineering.
  • Develop Critical Thinking and Analytical Skills: Exhibit the ability to think critically and analyze complex situations for effective problem-solving.
  • Effectively Communicate Mathematical Ideas: Communicate mathematical concepts and results clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing, to diverse audiences.
  • Utilize Modern Computational Tools: Employ contemporary computational tools and programming languages for mathematical modeling, data analysis, and simulations.

A Word from One of the Program’s Alumna and a Current Student

“The Applied Mathematics Program provided great insights into how my passion for numbers and mathematics could be relevant and applicable in the real world. While solving differential equations can be enjoyable, the program truly opened my eyes to the excitement of applying these skills to real-life problems. It also highlighted the opportunities to add value to society in the future. The program, along with the guidance of great professors, introduced me to the field of actuarial science and inspired me to become an actuary. I am truly grateful for the program and professors at MUIC. Without the Applied Mathematics Program, I don’t think I would be where I am today, enjoying a career that I love and excel at.”

“The teachers in the program are always willing to help and eager to answer any questions we have. Our ajarns’ enthusiasm for teaching creates a positive learning environment where we feel encouraged to ask questions, which helps us to be curious about things as well as deepen our understanding of various topics. This helps provide a mindset and encouragement of seeking to understand the ‘why’ behind concepts, rather than just the ‘how.’

“The program’s proof-based classes, such as Advanced Calculus, Complex Variables, and Abstract Algebra, really challenge us to think critically and approach concepts from a new perspective. These courses push us to explore fundamental questions like, ‘Why is 1>0?’ and rigorously prove concepts that we might have previously taken for granted. They force us not to take anything for granted and provide a new and at times a painful yet rewarding perspective on how to think about problems. This highlights how even simple concepts we often overlook can be far more complex than they appear!”
