Can the deaf appreciate music? Maybe more than people can imagine.
Thailand’s first-ever inclusive music event, the SZENSE Music Festival, was held on November 23, 2024, at the South East Asia Music Museum, Mahidol University, Nakhon Pathom.
The free event featured music and a plethora of activities to invite participants of all physical abilities to indulge all their senses—sight, sound, taste, touch and smell. Technology, such as motion graphics and animation, was designed by Mahidol University International College (MUIC) which added a unique dimension to music, allowing attendees to experience music in a novel way.
The SZENSE Music Festival was co-created by MUIC and College of Music, Mahidol University. As a part of the Accessible Thailand Wellness Tourism (ATWT) initiative funded by the Program Management Unit for Competitiveness (PMUC), the festival aimed at building an inclusive environment through music and enhancing Thailand’s offerings in accessible wellness tourism experiences. Prof. Piyamitr Sritara, MD, the President of Mahidol University, graced the special occasion.
Dr. Sarinya Sungatavat, the SZENSE Music Festival event director and designer, shared her insight on the festival:
“With the support of Prof. Chulathida Chomchai, MD, Dean of MUIC, and Dr. Narong Prangcharoen, Dean of the College of Music, Mahidol University, the SZENSE Music Festival is Mahidol University’s gift to the people of Thailand. This inclusive event highlights the university’s diverse strengths through the collaboration of faculty and students from various disciplines. As a member of the Tourism and Hospitality Division, I focused on the event’s design and concept, while colleagues from across the university contributed their expertise to create this unique multi-sensory experience. Dr. Dynaya Bhutipunthu and Mr. Yuttana Suntivong from the Communication Design Program, MUIC led their team in crafting visual elements for the music, while Ms. Napatt Piyawongwatthana from the same program, designed tactile 3D art installations. Asst. Prof. Dr. Manchuta Dangkulwanich and her students from the Chemistry Program, MUIC developed a signature scent, and Ms. Chutamas Jayuutdiskul from the Food Science and Technology Program, along with her students, created the taste and texture profiles for the food offerings. From the College of Music, Mr. Piyapong Ekrangsi, Assistant Dean for Marketing and Communications, and Mr. Attawit Sittirak, Content Creator, contributed by coordinating artist bookings, connecting us with local businesses, and advising on music performances and logistics. This festival exemplifies true collaboration and represents the shared creativity and dedication of Mahidol University’s community. Ms. Nara Pao-in, MU Vice President for People Management and Organization Development, gave the opening remarks.”
The festival’s slogan, “Harmonizing Senses, Elevate Well-being,” embodied the SZENSE Music Festival’s goal to foster inclusivity and enhance well-being. The festival placed a strong focus on delivering a unique, immersive experience through all five senses, using music as a medium for relaxation and rejuvenation. A variety of activities were also available, including:
- Instrument Petting Zoo: An interactive area for people of all ages to access and learn about musical instruments through touch.
- Music Therapy Sessions: An opportunity for attendees to explore the therapeutic power of music through rhythm, sound, and movement.
- Music-Mocktail Making: A drink-making art inspired by music, where participants enjoyed beverages crafted to reflect different musical styles.
The festival was supported by various Mahidol University departments and organizations, providing health, music, and arts information booths. Local communities also joined by setting up stalls offering health-conscious food, drinks, and products, along with a DIY activity zone for everyone.
The concept, “Sensorial Symphony,” invited attendees to immerse themselves in performances by talented artists and musicians. The Sensory Concert was a special charitable performance accessible to individuals with hearing impairments. The concert had two sessions: at 3:00 pm and 5:00 pm. There were guest performances from several artists such as the powerful-voiced singer from White Music, Monica; the new country boy band from GMM Music, New Country, and the talented contestant of The Voice, Hootoh.
Supported by the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research, and Innovation, the Thailand Science, Research and Innovation Promotion Committee, and the Program Management Unit for Competitiveness (PMUC), the SZENSE Music Festival offered free admission to interested parties, with open access to all concerts and activities.
