The Rakkaew Club of of Mahidol University International College (MUIC) hosted “The Art of Thai Sweets: Luk Chup Making Activity” at the Ground Floor, Aditayathorn Building, on November 13, 2024.
The 58 participating students eagerly studied the art of crafting the traditional Thai dessert “luk chup.” Initially, staff prepared the mung bean paste by soaking and steaming beans until tender, then mashing them into a smooth texture. The paste was then enriched with coconut milk and sugar for flavor. Once the mixture cooled, the fun began as participants shaped the paste into various forms, typically miniature fruits, sparking the students’ creativity and connecting them to a cultural tradition from the Thai royal courts.
Participants then painted the different miniature forms with edible colors to add realistic details, using fine brushes to achieve lifelike effects. The final touch was a glossy finish provided by an agar coating, prepared by staff who boiled agar until it was liquid and then dipped each piece to create a shiny appearance.
After drying, the “luk chup” pieces were packed, allowing participants to take home a unique and sweet souvenir.
This activity not only offered a culinary experience but also a cultural immersion, deepening participants’ appreciation for Thai traditions and artistic culinary practices.
