MUIC Successfully Launches AI Copter, a Digital Innovation that Acts as Personal Assistant for its Students
Mahidol University International College (MUIC) has announced the successful launch of “AI Copter,” an artificial intelligence platform designed to serve as a personal assistant for students, providing real-time, 24/7 academic counseling, career path analysis, and course information for each field, all in one place.
The launching was held on March 26, 2025 at the Spectrum Screening Room in Aditayathorn Building, as MUIC celebrated its 39th anniversary.
Prof.Chulathida Chomchai, MD, the Dean of Mahidol University International College (MUIC), said MUIC has launched “AI Copter,” an artificial intelligence (AI) system designed to enhance the learning experience and services for students. The main objective is to improve the efficiency of academic counseling, such as analyzing and recommending appropriate courses, selecting minors and choosing certificate programs that are in line with each individual’s interests and goals, as well as providing other relevant academic information.
The AI Copter system is based on Google Gemini and has been tailored to fit the context of the college using the Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) technique combined with fine-tuning parameters to ensure accurate, relevant, and student-specific responses to questions. The development of this project took approximately 12 months and marks an important milestone in Thailand’s education sector, showcasing the application of AI technology to effectively support teaching and learning.
The launch of AI Copter is in line with the trend of using AI at leading universities around the world. Many institutions worldwide are now integrating AI to enhance teaching, learning, and management efficiency. For example, Harvard University uses AI as an assistant in teaching computer science, helping students by answering questions and providing programming advice in real-time. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) has ongoing research projects related to AI, particularly in the areas of Human-AI Interaction and AI Policy Research. The University of California, Berkeley (UC Berkeley) uses AI to grade exams and to analyze student learning behavior to improve teaching processes. In China, universities such as Shenzhen University and Zhejiang University offer AI courses using DeepSeek technology.
The benefits that students will receive from AI Copter include real-time academic assistance, allowing students to immediately inquire about course details, class schedules, and study guidelines. The key features and highlights of AI Copter are outstanding in the comprehensive and personalized services tailored to the specific needs of each student, as follows:
- Academic Advice: The system can assist students in selecting courses, minors, and certificate programs that align with their personal interests and career goals.
- Career Counseling: AI Copter can analyze students’ academic interests and performance to recommend suitable career paths.
- International Exchange Opportunities: The system provides information and guidance on exchange programs and study abroad opportunities. MUIC has a network of over 140 partner universities worldwide.
- Efficient Information Delivery: AI Copter can notify students about important schedules, provide university updates, and other useful information.
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Yingyot Chiaravutthi, Deputy Dean of MUIC, said that AI Copter is an AI system developed based on MUIC’s database related to students in all dimensions, enabling it to provide precise support and meet the specific needs of students.
The launch plan for AI Copter is divided into three phases, with key details for each phase as follows:
• Phase 1 (Early 2025): The system will be tested for specific services, such as academic advice, course registration, and student activity information.
• Phase 2 (Mid-2025): AI services will expand to include career guidance, internship opportunities, and study abroad options.
• Phase 3 (Early 2026): AI Copter will be developed to provide real-time interactive services and to apply them to the college’s course management system.
AI Copter will significantly reduce personnel costs, with an estimated saving of 5 to 10 million Baht over the next five years. This is expected to result from a reduced workload for staff and advisors in providing initial consultations, reducing the need for more educational guidance personnel, and improving the efficiency of student services by introducing AI as an assistant.
Furthermore, MUIC is in the process of developing another AI system, “Helix,” which will support the work of faculty members, staff, and researchers, with plans for its launch in the near future.
The launch of AI Copter highlights MUIC’s dedication to leveraging innovation to create dynamic and future-ready learning experiences. It strengthens the college’s reputation as a leading international institution committed to preparing students to adapt to change and thrive on the global stage.
