Mahidol University International College’s (MUIC) Debate Club organized recruitment activities twice every 12 Weeks on Trimester 1/2023-2024 at Room A250, Adithayathorn Building.
The Recruitment Agenda included an introduction to the club’s history and mission, presentations on debating styles, icebreaker activities, mock debates, workshops, Q&A sessions, information about tournaments, testimonials, and details about membership requirements. The response emphasized creating an engaging and informative session to attract potential members, showcase the benefits of joining, and address any questions or concerns they may have.
One of the key beliefs of the Debate Club is that the only bad opinion is one you can not support. The club said it empathizes with those shy, timid souls who are thrust into the unfamiliar embrace of university life. “Everyone at one time or another has been that new kid on the playground and sometimes we need a little help to put ourselves out there and try to connect. That’s what our rookie sessions are all about,” said Gift, Vice President of Debate Club.
“As much as we want people to connect on stuff they agree on, we want to teach that it’s okay to be weird and true to yourself, in fact, a lot of the time it makes things more fun and interesting,” she added.
Many of the prompts and questions range from the weird philosophical delusions of a madman to the simple courtesy of who pays on a date. On the topic selection, Club President Ibrahim Dawoodjee explained, “We aren’t really looking for the same old ‘Where are you from? What’s your major? What’s your favorite food?’ When someone new steps up ready to speak up, we want them to have that honest reaction of ‘Huh? I never thought about that before.’ That’s what drags out conversations and that’s how we Ignite their Voices.”
