In observance of World Environment Day on June 5, 2021, a student-made documentary video featuring two research projects by Mahidol University International College (MUIC) lecturers was posted on video-sharing platform Youtube.
The video documentary was made by a team of MUIC students led by their director Mr. Junjie Qian, a Media Communication student, and featured the research and field work of Dr. Wayne Phillips of the Science Division in Koh Sak and the animated plastics research of Dr. Millicent Young of the Fine and Applied Arts Division.
Dr. Philips’ research involved the negative impact of mass tourism and pollution on the integrity of the reefs in Koh Sak and efforts to reverse their decline. Koh Sak is a small island off the coast of Pattaya, Chonburi province. In the past several years, Dr. Philips has brought his students to the island to see for themselves the effect of the plastic waste on the environment and led them in beach cleanup activities.
On the other hand, Dr. Young’s “Animated Plastics” project includes the collecting and reusing and reshaping of the found plastics in the island into animated stories to help educate, inform and entertain people about the problem of plastic waste in the oceans and rivers and waterways.
