Mahidol University International College (MUIC), in collaboration with Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University (APU), held the “Global Sustainable Development (GLAD) Program” from June 24 to August 5, 2020.
A total of 189 participants from more than 20 countries included students from APU and other overseas partner universities like Chonnam University of South Korea, University Sains Malaysia, and others. Twelve students from MUIC also participated.
The GLAD Program is a multicultural collaborative learning program conducted online using the Collaborative Online International Learning classroom format designed by Prof. Yuichi Kondo. It is designed to offer students an opportunity to understand global issues as global citizens and search for solutions. In the course of the program, participants will work online in groups of 5-6 students. Each group will have a student’s assistant who is fluent in both English and Japanese to facilitate communication. The groups each have to come up with a project that can contribute to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals. This gives the participants, who come from different backgrounds, the opportunity to voice out their varied opinions on the given topics and allow them to work together to come up with creative solutions.

“I really enjoyed the GLAD program which is my first online exchange collaborative program. I will briefly explain the reasons why this course is really worth it. First of all, I was able to make friends globally and get to know more about being a global citizen. Throughout this course, we participated in project-based learning where we voiced our opinion on global issues which are mainly related to SDGs, and came up with innovative solutions that involve a detailed plan of how each group will carry out its project for the future. Attending lecture sessions were also good. I learned more about successful social entrepreneurs as well as how to achieve what you want to do in real life no matter what. Lastly, which really impacts my real life, is to set learning objective goals in terms of both studies and life goals. Throughout the course, I found out that by setting learning objective goals I can clearly see the trend of how good or bad I am in doing my tasks so that it gets easier for me to evaluate myself. Overall, I really appreciate each individual who made this program happen and I hope to be involved in such programs more if it doesn’t clash with my university class schedule.”
