ALL IN ONE: MUIC’S COMMUNITY OF EXCELLENCE

ACCREDITATION AT A GLANCE
What is accreditation?

The fact of being officially recognized, accepted, or approved of, or the act of officially recognizing, accepting, or approving of something.
– Cambridge Dictionary

Accreditation is a formal, independent and third-party evaluation to determine if a program or institution meets recognized quality standards. In the education sector, numerous accreditation organizations evaluate the processes and/or products of an educational institution to determine if they measure up to globally–accepted standards. As of 2024, nine of Mahidol University International College’s (MUIC) major programs have been accredited or recognized by seven reputable accreditation institutions, a testament to MUIC’s academic excellence.

Q&A: WHY ACCREDITATION MATTERS TO YOU

Asst. Prof. Dr. Chompunuch Pongjit
Associate Dean for Educational Affairs

Q: How does accreditation enhance the students’ learning experience and future prospects?
A:
Accreditation ensures that the education students receive is of high quality and meets global standards. It improves the learning experience by keeping the curriculum relevant and aligned with industry demands. Accreditation also guarantees that resources such as libraries, labs, and technology are up-to-date, making the learning environment more engaging and effective. As a result, students graduate with the skills and knowledge they need to succeed in their careers, and their degrees are recognized by employers and institutions worldwide, opening doors for      better job prospects.

Q: How does accreditation improve the value of the degrees?

A: Accreditation serves as a sign of approval, indicating that a degree is from a respectable and respected institution. This certification is vital not only for students      but also for businesses that want people with proven credentials.

Q: How does it enhance the teaching quality of the faculty members?

A: Accreditation standards require faculty members to be well-qualified, experienced, and continuously engaged in professional development. This encourages faculty to stay current with the latest advancements in their fields and adopt innovative teaching methods. Ultimately, it results in a higher quality of instruction, directly benefiting students by providing them with a more enriching and up-to-date education.

Q: How does it attract better resources and opportunities for the benefit of the university?
A: Accredited institutions are more likely to attract funding, research grants, and partnerships with industry leaders. Accreditation signals that the university operates at a high standard, making it appealing to donors, research bodies, and international collaborators. These resources can then be reinvested into improving infrastructures, expanding programs, and offering more scholarships, further enhancing the overall quality of education and student experience.

Business Administration Division

Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB)

Amidst numerous business administration programs in Thailand, what makes the Business Administration (BA) Division of MUIC first among equals?

Asst. Prof. Dr. Thanarerk Thanakijsombat, Chair of the Business Administration (BA) Division said, “Our mission is to turn our students into future business leaders. They need to learn that the world keeps changing very fast, so they must have sustainability.

The academic excellence of the BA Division and MUIC has been validated by AACSB not once but twice as the accreditation was renewed this year. “Accreditation confirms that our programs are up to world standards,” Ajarn Thanarerk said.

As a result, the BA Division is among the top business schools in Thailand,      but      the division does not rest on its laurels. Renewing the ACCSB accreditation means constantly changing and improving the vision, the mission, and the strategy      to be abreast of industry developments. “We cannot stop (introducing innovations), otherwise we will not survive,” Ajarn Thanarerk explained.

“(The Business Administration Division) is focused on its mission, which is to ensure that these future business leaders will have a concern for sustainability.”

ASSOCIATION TO ADVANCE COLLEGIATE SCHOOLS OF BUSINESS (AACSB)

“The Finance Program’s target is to make all graduating Finance students pass the CFA Level 1 exam.”
Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA)

Finance Program

Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA)

What gives the Finance program its edge? Asst. Prof. Dr. Phassawan Suntraruk, Finance Program Director, enumerated three strengths of the program, namely, sustainable finance, ethical investment, and financial technology.

She added that being affiliated with Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) makes Finance graduates a standout in the labor market. “It shows that MUIC meets the global standards for expertise in the financial industry,” she said, adding that many of MUIC’s Finance students have already passed Level 1. The fact that 70% of the program’s curriculum is already based on the CFA’s Common Body of Knowledge is a tremendous help to prepare the students for the examination.

To reach its goal of ensuring that Finance graduates pass      Level 1 examination, the BA Division is facilitating scholarship grants from the CFA Society of Thailand for students taking      the examination. Add to that a grant from the Capital Market Development Fund (CMDF) which financially supports a boot camp for 30-50 students planning to take      Level 1 examination and a training program for Finance Program faculty members.

Computer Science Program

ASEAN University Network – Quality Assurance (AUN-QA)

Accreditation by the ASEAN University Network – Quality Assurance’s (AUN-QA) helps enhance the reputation of the Computer Science Program and MUIC, according to Dr. Piti Ongmongkolkul, Chair of the Science Division.      He added       that it smoothens the way to build networks and relationships with similar reputable universities abroad.

Ajarn Piti said that the program’s AUN-QA accreditation in March 2022 validated the academic excellence they maintain in the Computer Science Program and in the Science Division. According to him, “The industry knows that we produce very high quality Computer Science graduates. Some companies would call us to ask, ‘Do you have more students?’

The Computer Science Program’s secret sauce, he said, lies in its emphasis on providing a strong foundation for the students. “We teach them the basics, but we ensure that they also learn the newest technology.”

“The important thing to teach students  is the importance of lifelong learning. We give our Computer Science students a strong foundation and they can go out and learn everything they need by themselves. Whatever new technology is out there, they can learn in two weeks, that’s it.”

ASEAN University Network – Quality Assurance (AUN-QA)

“We do our best to provide world-class chemistry education to prepare our students for the changing world and gaining the ACS recognition validates that.”

American Chemistry Society (ACS)

Chemistry Program

American Chemistry Society (ACS)

Asst. Prof. Dr. Manchuta Dangkulwanich, Program Director of the Chemistry Program, noted that “the recognition by the American Chemical Society (ACS) Program for Recognition of Global Programs in Chemical Sciences shows that our chemistry curriculum is world-class, broad-based, rigorous and aligns with the standards of ACS-approved four-year bachelor’s degree programs in the United States.”

“In practical terms, the ACS recognition enhanced the curriculum of the Chemistry Program and the students now have access to modern instruments both at MUIC and MU-FRF (Mahidol University Frontier Research Facility),” she added.

She looks forward to the benefits that the students graduating under the ACS recognition would reap.  “Graduates from ACS-approved programs in the US are better prepared for technical employment, and so should graduates from ACS-recognized programs outside of the US.”

Applied Mathematics Program

Casualty Actuarial Society (CAS) University Recognition Program

The Applied Mathematics Program is the latest among MUIC programs to be accredited (2024), in this case by the Casualty Actuarial Society (CAS) University Recognition Program (Bronze Level).

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Aram Tangboonduangjit, Applied Mathematics Program Director, enumerated the following benefits of CAS recognition:

  • Ensures High Academic Standards Guarantees that we maintain rigorous academic standards and continually improve our curriculum to meet international benchmarks.
  • Enhances Degree Recognition Increases the value and recognition of our degrees both nationally and internationally, making our graduates more competitive in the global job market.
  • Facilitates Student Mobility Enables easier credit transfer and student exchange opportunities with other institutions worldwide.
  • Demonstrates Commitment to Quality Education Shows prospective students, employers, and partners our dedication to providing high-quality education.
  • Validates Program Relevance Complements our CAS recognition, further validating the quality and relevance of our program in preparing students for successful careers in actuarial science and other fields.

“(The Applied Mathematics Program’s CAS recognition) showcases our dedication to maintaining high academic standards and continually improving our curriculum, benefiting prospective students, employers, and research partners.”

Casualty Actuarial Society (CAS) University Recognition Program

“Apart from a recognition of international educational standard, the key benefit is having a different perspective that will help us to adopt a more industrial-oriented curriculum, a better outcome-based education (OBE) curriculum design and implementation, and effectively respond to the stakeholders’ needs.”

UN Tourism.TedQual

Travel and Service Business Entrepreneurship Program

UN Tourism.TedQual

What makes the Travel and Service Business Entrepreneurship (BM-TSB) Program unique, according to Dr. Veerades Panvisavas, Chair of the Tourism and Hospitality Management Division, is the development of the students’ entrepreneurial skills aside from operational and managerial skills. There are also numerous opportunities in internship, student exchange, study abroad, and collaboration.

Capping all these is the BM-TSB Program’s accreditation in 2018 by the UN Tourism.TedQual (formerly known as UNWTO TedQual). By the time the accreditation was renewed in 2022, the BM-TSB Program has chalked up impressive achievements including improvement in the UN Tourism.TedQual scores and an increase in the number of successful alumni in the past ten      years. The THM Division leadership expressed confidence that the program can only get better as it continues to align with international standards.

Communication Design Program

ASEAN University Network – Quality Assurance (AUN-QA)

According to Dr. Dynaya Bhutipunthu, head of the Communication Design Program (CDP) accreditation committee, CDP became the first and only program of its kind in Thailand and ASEAN to be certified by AUN-QA in March      2022. This sets CDP apart from other similar programs in Southeast Asia.

Ajarn Dynaya added that CDP “aims to produce professional designers who have problem-solving design skills in a diverse context of the world’s current issues and intercultural challenges. With      innovative design solutions for positive social contributions, it is the only program of its kind that is situated in a world-class liberal arts college education environment.”

“(The AUN-QA accreditation) motivates us to continue improving the program to be the best and beneficial for our students. Our ultimate goal is that the program’s graduates are equipped with portfolios that would give them an edge when they apply for any communication design job opportunities anywhere in the world.”

ASEAN University Network – Quality Assurance (AUN-QA)

“Accreditation through AUN-QA is crucial as it ensures we meet international standards of educational quality, guarantees that our curriculum is rigorous, our teaching methods are effective, and that our graduates are well-prepared to compete in the global job market.”

ASEAN University Network – Quality Assurance (AUN-QA)

Media and Communication Program

ASEAN University Network – Quality Assurance (AUN-QA)

Dr. Nunnapan Puathanawat, Media and Communication Program Director, explained that achieving ASEAN University – Quality Assurance (AUN-QA) 4.0 accreditation demonstrates that the program meets international recognition and standards in the areas of teaching, curriculum design, and student outcomes “making it more attractive to prospective students and faculty, both locally and internationally.”

The AUN-QA accreditation also shows that the program remains relevant and aligned with the latest trends in digital media, communication, and convergence and “guarantees that it is consistently updated to reflect industry demands and technological advancements.”

She added that the accreditation also means promoting a culture of continuous improvement within the program.

Preparation Center for Languages and Mathematics (PC)

National ELT Accreditation Scheme (NEAS)

The Preparation Center for Languages and Mathematics (PC) serves as MUIC’s college pathway program, preparing students to successfully pass MUIC’s admission requirements.

According to Mr. Joseph Serrani, PC Director, what makes PC unique from other pathway programs is that “it meets or exceeds the highest international standards for English language teaching and college readiness. PC’s curriculum is also finely crafted to enhance students’ academic English, study and research skills, and use of IT. Finally, students work collaboratively and establish friendships that can last a lifetime.”

“Accreditation by Australia-based National ELT Accreditation Scheme (NEAS),” Mr. Serrani added, “ensures that PC always strives to improve every aspect of the program.”

“NEAS’s expertise ensures that PC is up-to-date with best management and teaching practices. PC students want to learn English and prepare for university studies effectively and efficiently, and NEAS quality assurance is vital in achieving those goals.”

Moving forward, these accreditations will guide our initiatives to continuously improve programs, faculty, and facilities. A primary focus will be integrating cutting-edge technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) into our curriculum to equip students with the skills needed for tomorrow’s careers. The credibility from these accreditations also allows MUIC to expand global partnerships, offering students more exchange programs, research collaborations, and cross-cultural learning experiences—essential in today’s interconnected world.

Reflecting on 2024, I am deeply proud of MUIC’s accomplishments in research, community engagement, and student success. These milestones are a testament to the dedication of our faculty, students, and staff, and they affirm that we are on the right path toward excellence.

As we welcome 2025, my hope is that the MUIC community continues to embrace innovation, resilience, and purpose. Together, let’s build on this momentum and make the upcoming year even more impactful.
